NOAA: East Coast Under A Winter Weather Advisory | Snowfall Rates Up To 1" Per Hour

Much of the East Coast is under a Winter Weather Advisory for the first time this winter. NOAA is forecasting snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour in the North Country.

From NOAA’s Winter Weather Advisory:

* ACCUMULATIONS…SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 3 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW…WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS IN EASTERN VERMONT. A TRACE TO UP TO A TENTH OF AN INCH OF ICE IS ALSO EXPECTED.

* MAXIMUM SNOWFALL RATE…UP TO 1 INCH PER HOUR…MAINLY TUESDAY MORNING.

Hazardous Weather Outlook

DAY ONE…TEMPERATURES WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING TONIGHT AND COMBINED WITH WET ROADWAYS…THE THREAT FOR BLACK ICE WILL INCREASE. ICY ROADS WILL MAKE FOR SLIPPERY AND HAZARDOUS TRAVEL TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY.

OUR FIRST WIDESPREAD WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON WILL IMPACT ALL OF NORTHERN NEW YORK AND VERMONT BEGINNING MIDNIGHT MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH 7:00 PM TUESDAY. SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD THE AREA FROM SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST EARLY TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH MID-MORNING BEFORE CHANGING TO SLEET AND THEN A MIX OF LIGHT FREEZING DRIZZLE OR DRIZZLE LATE TUESDAY AFTERNOON. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE IN THE 3 TO 7 INCHES RANGE WITH THE HIGHEST TOTALS OVER EASTERN VERMONT.

THE TUESDAY MORNING COMMUTE WILL BE DIFFICULT AS A BURST OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW DEVELOPS BETWEEN 5:00 AM AND 10:00 AM. VISIBILITIES WILL BE A MILE OR LESS AND ROADS WILL BE SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY.
