Mt. Washington, New Hampshire — A major part of Tuckerman Ravine is now closed for the season.

This weekend, the Mt. Washington Avalanche Center announced that a portion of the Tuckerman Ravine trail had been shut down until further notice. This is due to crevasses and undermining that form during each spring’s melting process. The closure is around the Lip Area, as the exact location is from the Lunch Rocks to the Headwall. The key thing here is that this closure includes skiing in this area.

Ryan DeLena, who’s known for his backcountry skiing expeditions, shared his thoughts on the closure on MWA Center’s Instagram page:

“Surprised it didn’t close earlier! The lip got dicey real quick this season.”
