Sochi’s Olympic champion Matthias Mayer crashed yesterday resulting in the first ever deployment of a airbag system for a downhill skier during a World Cup event.

Mayer was racing in the Men’s Downhill World Cup race in Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites yesterday when he crash. He was airlifted to a hospital in Bolzano. Reports are that Mayer underwent season-ending surgery on two broken vertebrae as a result of the crash.
