Tree limb about the snap from weight of new storm snow in Squaw Valley
Tree limb about the snap from weight of new storm snow in Squaw Valley

Yes, I being a bit facetious here.  A dusting of snow like this is almost a slap in the face.   I suppose we could say that it’s the biggest snowfall of February so far.  And that is sayin’ something…right?  Yeah?  No?

The reality is that we are in a zillion percent better position than we were in before the big storms rolled in last month.  The two ugly man-made runs off Red Dog and Squaw Creek have been replaced with a comparable plethora of upper mountain terrain.

Right now, you can ski Sibo, Shirley, and Granite up top and that is a helluva lotta terrain compared with what we were stuck to before.

Buried wood pile

On thing I will tell you right now is that this place will GO OFF when we get our next good 3 foot dump.  There are so many interesting terrain features, bumps, jumps, and transitions on the hill right now due to the low snow level.  The base is decent right now so with a few feet on top of what we have, this place will be a freeskier/rider’s paradise.

The only problem with that fantasy is that there is no snow forecasted in the next 6-10 days and that high temperatures are threatening to melt away the solid base we have right now.

Granite Chief playground right now

I’m staying positive thinking about what a playground this place will be when it does snow.
