18-year-old Asli Nemutlu died in a hard crash while ski race training today at Konakli ski resort near Erzurum, Turkey.
Asli is reported to have fallen and slid a long way. The fall unfortunately had enough force force to fracture Asli’s neck.
Erzurum Training and Research Hospital received Asli and she was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived.
Asli had been skiing since the age of 3. Her specialities were slalom and giant slalom.
This is devastating news. Traumatic neck, spine, and head injuries do seem to be more prevalent than ever in our sports of snowboarding and skiing lately.
Our condolences go out to Asli’s friends and loved ones.
Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death and injury among skiers and snowboarders. Over 23,000 skiers and snowboarders suffer head injuries each year.
