While places such as Whistler and Alaska continue to receive the snow god’s blessings, today at beautiful Squaw Valley, California, things have been a little less than beautiful. Over night we saw trace amounts of rain, and for an entirely man made snow pack the damage inflicted by even the smallest amounts of rain is calamitous. Despite valiant efforts by the snow making crew at Squaw, things are beginning to head south. Red Dog and Squaw Creek have both begun to spring stems of brush and rocky roller balls, with snow melting off quick.
With manky snow and the holiday hordes, it didn’t long for the skiing to become variable. And rumors have been circulating that snow making has been put on hold on the upper mountain due to malfunctioning pumps after the Tough Mudder event this past summer ( that, and the fact that it’s nice and balmy sitting in the low 50’s currently).
On the bright side, skiing rain affected slop was a nice reprieve from the man made ice sheet mayhem we’ve had for the past weeks. Start burning your old skis, do a snow dance, do anything you can to appease the snow gods…we need snow!!
