A climber who reportedly fell approximately 200 feet was airlifted to a hospital this past Friday, May 13th, according to Custer County Search & Rescue (CCSAR). The incident occurred near Spread Eagle Peak in Custer County, Colorado. Three others who were with the individual when he fell, and reported the incident at around 3 p.m., stating that they were unable to reach the man but could see that he was injured.

Both the Colorado Army National Guard (COARNG) and REACH Air Medical Services assisted the CCSAR with the search. Upon reaching the climber, five individuals (two from REACH and three from CCSR) stabilized the man while waiting for the helicopter.

A COARNG helicopter was able to transport the base, where he was then taken to a hospital while two teams assisted the other three climbers in returning to the base. Shoutout to all of the rescue teams involved, the Colorado Hoist Rescue team and Colorado Search and Rescue Association.

CCSAR wishes to remind everyone to be aware of the conditions and to carry the ten essentials while climbing:

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind folks of variable spring weather conditions in the area. Expect patchy snow, rushing creeks, downed trees and difficult travel even on-trail. The freeze/thaw cycle transitioning from winter conditions can create a dangerous environment with especially loose, crumbly terrain particularly along cliff edges and areas with high exposure. We advise carrying the 10 Essentials and keep in mind that rescue missions can take several hours to complete.”CCSAR
