Cody, Wyoming — Sleeping Giant’s bizarre year continues. After not opening during the 2023-24 season due to a lack of snow, a “season’s worth of snow” in the spring means they won’t have any summer activities either.

Yesterday, Sleeping Giant announced they won’t be operating their zipline experience this summer. Due to the amount of runoff from their snowpack, the lodge’s basement flooded. Because of the extensive repairs needed, they won’t open the zipline and will focus on training employees and repairing the mountain instead.

Located two miles outside of Yellowstone’s East Gate, Sleeping Giant is home to the largest zipline in the state. Accessed by riding the Sheepeater chairlift, guests glide down the mountain through five stages of the zipline network. The one-and-a-half-hour experience includes an optional 35-foot quick drop and flying above the ski resort and the Fork Shoshone River.

The official statement from Sleeping Giant is below.

“Dear Friends of Sleeping Giant,

We wanted to provide you with a brief update on our summer season plans. After not being able to open for the winter due to lack of snow, we were then hit with almost a season’s worth of snow in just a few weeks followed by several days of very warm temperatures which lead to heavy runoff from the mountain that ended up flooding the basement of our lodge. Thus we will not be opening the zipline this summer and instead plan to focus on training, clean up and repairs at the mountain.

We know this will come as a big disappointment to many of you, but we feel this is the most responsible choice we could make at this time.

It’s been a tough few months for the Giant, but we are proud that we were able to get through this time of adversity and keep most staff on payroll for about ½ the winter season despite not being able to open and were able to work out a plan to keep core staff employed year round. This took a lot of effort by both ownership and management to achieve, and we are thankful to everyone that stuck with us through this period.

We are now focused on lodge repairs and general maintenance including turning on the lifts regularly to keep them in working order, and will be sitting down in June to iron out our summer plans and budget for the winter. There are still several variables including full assessment of the damage done from the flood that we need to work out before we announce any further goals for the summer but we promise to come out with further announcements in June once we have a better idea of what we think is possible.

As always, we thank you for your support.

Sleeping Giant.
