Provo Canyon, Utah — One of the ski resorts that’s changed the most in the 2020s has been Sundance Mountain Resort. The closest ski resort to the city of Provo, Sundance, had long been a quiet mountain for day skiers. However, the new ownership at Sundance has poured money into the place, spending over $40 million on various projects.

Yesterday, Sundance Mountain Resort announced Act Two, which is a slew of projects that the ownership has done since acquiring the mountain, and the next steps of their plan.

The major project that’s underway is the building of The Inn at Sundance. The western-themed 63-room hotel will give Sundance a slopeside hotel. The hotel will have a lounge, a ski locker room, porch deck. They are planning to open The Inn next year.

In addition, the hotel will be home to the Mountain Veterans Program, which will provide Adaptive ski lessons to our nation’s veterans.

Other planned additions for 2024 and 2025 include the new Mountain Camp Day Lodge near Jake’s Lift, the building of townhomes, and the continuation of the Cottage renovations.

The most intriguing part of this Act Two plan is a new chairlift and planned terrain expansion. In 2026, Sundance will add a new high-speed chairlift and expand its terrain into the Electric Horseman area. The base terminal will be next to the bottom of the Wildwood chairlift, and the top terminal will be situated near the top of Red’s Lift. Currently, the Back Mountain is not serviced by a high-speed chairlift.

Reaction to the news was mixed. Some were excited to see a slopeside hotel and another terrain expansion. Others were disappointed by Sundance’s continued development, as they don’t believe it’s what the original owner, Robert Redford, intended.

I’m kinda surprised by the angry comments. When you visit Sundance, you get a sense that this is a nice place to stay for a vacation. Sundance’s growth in becoming a destination resort is important for the trajectory of Utah’s ski industry, especially with another Olympics on tap. Sure, it’s a big building compared to what is currently there, but it’s not excessive like other huge hotels at bigger ski resorts.

The only part of the development I feel meh about is the townhomes that will be available to move in 2025. I really don’t like the cramped townhome setup that’s become common in skiing communities and cities. For skiing communities, I wouldn’t want a cramped property, as that’s not what I envision when living in the mountains.

Ultimately, if Sundance wasn’t on your radar for your next ski vacation, it definitely should be now.
