As of yesterday, Mt. Ruapehu is declaring an extended season that will last through October 26 and past the original October 11th closing date.

The north island’s premier ski field has experienced what Kiwis refer to as a “bumper” season thus far and are predicting the base to last well through October. The decision, which was reached by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (or RAL), will allow the resort to run chairs through the New Zealand “Labour Weekend” (Not to be confused with the United States’ “Labor Day”).

Ruapehu Basin Looks Rad: Here is What You Missed This Summer @ Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand

In an interview with the New Zealand Herald, the executive manager-commercial of Mt. Ruapehu, Simon Dickson told one reporter “We’ve welcomed the cooler temperatures we’ve been experiencing this spring as it’s brought us a significant amount of high quality snow that we weren’t expecting.”

Mt. Ruapehu has a 111” base

Later Dickinson added, “The wide expansive trails, and high quality snow conditions, reinforce the fact that Mt Ruapehu is the perfect Spring skiing destination.”

Which has me thinking… Could it be possible to ski in New Zealand one day and Arapahoe Basin or Loveland the next?

Bring it on October!
