The National Park Service is asking the public to help shape the future of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Officials began a 30-day public involvement period focused on long-term recovery and redevelopment on October 6th, with the public comment period remaining open until November 6th.
he effort comes as the North Rim continues recovering from the devastating 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire and more recent flash floods that have affected infrastructure and recovery operations.
NPS Seeks Input on North Rim’s Future
The National Park Service is developing a long-term vision and draft redevelopment concepts for the North Rim. The planning process will examine visitor facilities, infrastructure, employee and operational needs, public safety, emergency preparedness and the area’s historic and natural character.
According to the NPS, recent events have highlighted the need for infrastructure and utilities that can better withstand the challenges of the remote North Rim environment. Public feedback collected during this initial concept phase will help officials refine potential alternatives before a comprehensive recovery plan is developed.
Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Ed Keable said the recent challenges have created an opportunity to develop a long-term vision that respects the North Rim’s history while improving its resilience for future generations.
Grand Canyon North Rim Remains Open
Grand Canyon National Park remains open at both the North Rim and South Rim, although some affected areas within the inner canyon remain closed while recovery work continues.
The NPS emphasized that the current flood response and infrastructure recovery operations are separate from the long-term planning process, although the ongoing work is informing decisions about the North Rim’s future.
The remote nature of the North Rim makes reliable infrastructure, emergency preparedness and visitor safety important considerations as officials evaluate future redevelopment concepts.
How to Submit Feedback
The NPS will host multiple opportunities throughout October for members of the public to learn more about the planning process and provide feedback. Both virtual and in-person public meetings are planned.
Planning documents, meeting information and instructions for submitting comments are available through the NPS project website. Public comments will be accepted through November 6th.
