Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort is preparing to celebrate its 80th winter season with a series of new improvements, environmental projects and anniversary events. The Lake Tahoe ski resort will mark eight decades of operation during the 2026-2027 season, beginning with its roots as Sierra Ski Ranch in 1946.
The resort announced the changes on September 17th as it prepares for another winter in the Sierra Nevada. The anniversary celebrations will include special events, historical displays and new technology aimed at improving the guest experience.
“Eighty years ago, this mountain started as two brothers’ dream to build a ski area on one of the snowiest points in the Sierra Nevada. Each generation since has built on that legacy, which we are excited to honor throughout the season while ushering in next chapter of this adored mountain.” – General Manager and Vice President Dan Healy.
New App Coming This Winter
One of the biggest additions for the 2026-27 season will be a new Sierra-at-Tahoe mobile app. The app is scheduled to launch on the App Store and Google Play in November.
The app will feature an interactive trail map along with leaderboards, badges and rewards tied to on-mountain activity. The resort says the new technology is designed to give guests additional ways to track and engage with their time on the mountain.
Sierra-at-Tahoe is also introducing a new parking reservation system for weekends and holiday periods. Reservations will be free for passholders and vehicles carrying four or more people. Vehicles with three or fewer occupants will pay $25 for a reservation.
Reforestation Continues After Caldor Fire
The resort has also completed a major phase of its post-Caldor Fire reforestation project. Sierra-at-Tahoe partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and El Dorado Resource Conservation District on the effort.
More than 60,000 tree saplings have now been planted, including 40,000 during the summer of 2026. The trees were planted in clusters intended to help restore the mountain environment while supporting future tree skiing and increasing the forest’s resilience to wind.
80 Years of Sierra-at-Tahoe
Sierra-at-Tahoe will celebrate its original opening date of December 21 with a special anniversary activation. Historical photographs will be displayed in Aspen Cafe, while anniversary merchandise will be available at Sierra Mountain Sports.
The resort also plans to release a short film this fall featuring its history, longtime employees and season passholders.
Sierra-at-Tahoe expects to open for the 2026-27 season once sufficient snow arrives, typically between late November and early December. The resort is also inviting guests and employees to submit their favorite Sierra memories for potential features on its social media channels throughout the winter.
