WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK, N.M. — A beloved fixture of White Sands National Park has collapsed after standing tall against the desert elements for more than seven decades.

Park officials announced that an iconic Rio Grande Cottonwood Tree, located along the popular Dune Life Nature Trail, fell following recent monsoon storms. Strong winds and heavy rain likely destabilized the tree’s extensive root system, bringing down a landmark that delighted generations of visitors and park rangers alike.

Striking and seemingly out of place among the stark, rolling white gypsum dunes, the cottonwood was a favorite subject for photographers. Park officials estimate the tree was likely well over 75 years in age. Archival photos show the tree fully grown and established as early as 1959, suggesting it sprouted at least a decade prior.

Over the years, shifting sands uniquely reshaped the tree’s appearance. By 2012, wind erosion had exposed a dramatic tangle of roots above the surface, which eventually developed a thick, protective bark to adapt to the harsh environment. As wind continued to blow sand away from its base in recent years, the tree’s exposed root structure grew even more prominent.

While the fallen cottonwood marks the end of an era for the Dune Life Nature Trail, park officials note that its legacy lives on in the countless memories and photographs shared by park visitors over the decades.

“Even though the tree is now on the ground, it can still serve as habitat for a variety of animals. For your own safety, please do not climb on the downed tree.”

The striking appearance of this tree and its tangle of roots has likely been a subject of thousands of photos over the years. Here we share some of the rangers’ favorites. You are welcome to share your own photos in the comments below as we say goodbye to one of the toughest survivors of the Chihuahuan Desert.
