Like any old building in New England, the Omni Mount Washington Resort & Spa is pretty notoriously haunted. Guests have reported ghost sightings, objects disappearing mysteriously, and bizarre visions of specters throughout the building. But the hotel isn’t Mountain Washington’s only haunted building. The Mount Washington Observatory, sitting right at the mountain’s summit, has quite a few spooky stories of its own.

The Mount Washington Observatory was founded in 1932, with scientists and staff making the building their home as they the severe weather Mount Washington is known for. According to many of those staff, late nights in the observatory often come with mysterious occurrences, like doors and door knobs moving without anyone nearby and elevators riding up and down with nobody controlling them. Some theories say that the many spirits of lost mountaineers continue to linger on Mount Washington’s slopes.

While it wouldn’t be easy to comment on the existence of lost spirits in the Mount Washington Observatory, it’s certainly easy to note the many incredible weather events that have occurred on the mountain. On April 12, 1934, for example, staff in the observatory clocked world record wind speeds of 231 miles per hour. That record has since been broken, but it’s still remarkably impressive. With the wind and weather acting that wild, it’s not hard to see how staff and scientists find themselves a bit alarmed by weird noises and moving doors.
