Basye, Virginia — Out of all places in the USA, it may surprise you that one of the biggest (definitely not the biggest) ski resort terrain expansions that’s opening this upcoming winter is in Virginia.
This week, Bryce Resort announced that it’ll be opening a terrain expansion this upcoming winter. The expansion was approved by the ski resort’s members last spring. This terrain expansion on the backside of Bryce will add four new trails: one green, two blue, and one black, resulting in a 35% increase in skiable terrain. It will be serviced by a new fixed-grip quad chairlift from SkyTrac.
The trails are cut, the snowmaking infrastructure is in place, and it looks like the lift is nearing completion. An opening during the 2025-26 season is likely.
Located in the Shenandoah Valley, Bryce Resort is only a two-hour drive away from Washington, D.C. While it’s a member-owned ski resort, it’s open to the public, as it’s actually on the Indy Pass. Prior to the expansion, the ski resort featured 8 trails, 5 lifts, and a vertical drop of 500 feet. Some of the other winter activities include snow tubing and ice skating. In the summer, Bryce Resort is home to an 18-hole golf course and lift-serviced mountain biking. Its growth as a ski resort demonstrates that while it may not be in the snowiest climate, it’s possible to have a successful ski resort in the Southeast.
