To safeguard wildlife from the dangers posed by busy roadways, a network of manmade overpasses and underpasses has been constructed throughout the United States. These structures allow animals of all sizes to safely cross roads, reducing collisions and saving lives. Approximately 1,500 of these crossings are already in place. Correspondent Conor Knighton explores how these crossings have not only reduced roadkill but also protected genetic diversity within animal populations. He takes a closer look at the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Los Angeles, which, once completed, will provide a safe passage for cougars over one of the nation’s busiest highways.
