The only mountain parrot species in the world is the Kea, native to the South Island of New Zealand.

The kea are extremely intelligent and have been known to open backpacks of unsuspecting hikers to steal food.

They have been protected since 1986 after a large number of the species was killed for bounty to protect farmer’s sheep.

Who would have thought that parrots live in high alpine environments?

So cool!
