Bartlett, New Hampshire A skier’s worst nightmare became true for one guest at a New Hampshire ski resort today.

Today, a chair detached from the Flying Bear Express lift at Attitash Mountain Resort. Installed back in 1995, the detachable high-speed quad chairlift is nearly 30 years old. A single person was on that carrier when it fell around twenty feet to the ground. The individual was reportedly conscious and was transported to the hospital. It appears that he suffered a back injury, but will be ok.

Ultimately, it creates another negative headline for Vail Resorts. A similar situation occurred at Heavenly Resort in December, where a rollback on a chairlift resulted in five people being hospitalized. That chairlift was closed to undergo a thorough inspection and has since reopened.

The situation presents a major bump on the road for a ski resort that has been growing its reputation in New England skiing. The additions of the Mountaineer Express and Progression Quad in recent years have greatly improved the guest experience on the Attitash side of the mountain. Other recent improvements include snowmaking upgrades and the return of the Hunky Dory trail. This situation, along with whatever the heck has been going on at Wildcat this season, creates more difficulties for Vail Resorts in trying to convince passholders to not ditch the Epic Pass.

A spokesperson for Vail Resorts, which operates Attitash Mountain Resort, issued the following statement to the media:

“Attitash Mountain can confirm an incident occurred on its Flying Bear chairlift today, February 2, 2025. The safety of our guests is our top priority, and the resort is investigating the incident.”
