The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has named Raimund Plancker its new Chief Race Director for men’s alpine skiing, marking a leadership change for the organization responsible for overseeing the sport’s World Cup circuit.

Plancker will officially take over the position on November 1, succeeding Markus Waldner, who recently announced his decision to step down from the role. The change comes as the 2026-27 Audi FIS Ski World Cup season gets underway, with Plancker set to begin his new responsibilities at the men’s slalom race in Levi, Finland, on November 15.

The appointment brings an experienced coach and longtime member of the international ski racing community into one of the sport’s most influential administrative positions. The chief race director plays an important role in overseeing competitions throughout the season, helping ensure events run smoothly for athletes, organizers and spectators.

Experienced Coach Takes Over Leadership Role

Plancker, originally from Val Gardena in northern Italy, built his reputation through years of coaching elite ski racers. Before joining FIS, he spent a decade working with various top-level teams within the Italian skiing federation.

He joined FIS as Assistant Race Director for men’s speed events in 2022, giving him several seasons of experience working directly with the organization’s World Cup operations.

“We are very happy to have agreed on an excellent solution for the team. First and foremost, because Raimund is one of the most knowledgeable and respected voices in all of Alpine Skiing, but also because this ensures a healthy continuity.” – FIS Alpine Director Janne Leskinen.

Plancker said he was honored to take on the responsibility and credited the people around him for helping make the transition possible.

“I am proud and honored to take on this responsibility, and I am only doing so because I know that I will work hand in hand with an incredible team of professionals at FIS.” – Raimund Plancker

No Major Changes Planned for World Cup Team

Despite the leadership change, FIS does not anticipate major changes to its existing men’s alpine team. Hannes Trinkl will continue overseeing speed events, while Janez Hladnik remains responsible for technical disciplines, including slalom and giant slalom.

FIS will recruit a replacement for Plancker’s former position as Assistant Race Director for men’s speed events. Waldner will also help support Plancker during the transition into his new role.
