One of the biggest barriers to getting into skiing or snowboarding is the cost. Between lift tickets, rentals and lessons, trying the sport for the first time can be an expensive proposition. This winter, a major Colorado ski resort is offering newcomers a chance to get on snow without paying for a lift ticket.
Steamboat Resort is making its Buckaroo Carpet available for free public use during the 2026-27 ski season. The beginner conveyor lift, located near the Steamboat Gondola and adjacent to the Creekside Locker Room, will be available daily from noon to 4 p.m. with no lift ticket required.
The offer is open to guests of all ages, although first-time users must complete a waiver before using the lift.
Free Magic Carpet Access and Equipment Rentals for Young Children
For anyone unfamiliar with magic carpets, they are conveyor-style lifts that allow skiers and snowboarders to stand on their equipment while being transported uphill. They are commonly used on gentle beginner slopes, where newcomers can practice stopping, turning and controlling their speed without having to load or unload a chairlift.
Steamboat’s complimentary access gives beginners an opportunity to practice those fundamentals before committing to a full day of skiing. The resort is also offering complimentary equipment rentals for children ages 3 and younger who are using the Buckaroo Carpet. Rentals are available through Steamboat Sports in Steamboat Square, with pickup beginning after 11 a.m. and equipment due back by 4 p.m.
Steamboat Is Also Offering Free Skiing for Kids This December
The beginner carpet program is one of several ways Steamboat is making skiing more accessible this winter.
From November 21 through December 15, 2026, children ages 12 and younger can ski or snowboard for free at the resort without any additional purchase requirement. Parents can claim complimentary lift tickets online by selecting the designated $0 children’s ticket for eligible dates.
Steamboat has also made substantial investments in beginner terrain in recent years. Its Greenhorn Ranch learning center features dedicated beginner slopes, terrain-based learning features, magic carpets and the Greenhorn Ranch Express chairlift.
The free Buckaroo Carpet program provides a simpler introduction to skiing and snowboarding at the base of the mountain, where beginners can get comfortable sliding on snow before deciding whether to invest in lift tickets and lessons.
Steamboat’s 2026-27 winter season is scheduled to begin November 21, conditions permitting.
