When it comes to finding the best ski resort, great snow and challenging terrain are only part of the equation. The atmosphere surrounding a mountain can be just as important, from a lively ski town to a quiet base area that still feels like a place built around skiing.
We recently asked Unofficial Networks Facebook followers which resort has the best combination of snow, terrain, and atmosphere. The responses produced a wide-ranging list of destinations across North America and Europe.
Alta, Grand Targhee and Other Western Favorites
Alta appeared several times in the comments, including alongside Snowbird and Brighton as part of a broader Utah combination. Grand Targhee also received multiple mentions, with one skier highlighting the dramatic views toward the Tetons as a major part of the experience.
Copper Mountain was another standout. One commenter specifically pointed to its combination of moguls, groomers, steep terrain, and a terrain park, along with reliable snow coverage. Steamboat also received praise for its terrain, snow coverage, lodging, and restaurants.
Other Colorado favorites mentioned included Telluride, Winter Park, Vail, Loveland, Arapahoe Basin, Wolf Creek, and the broader collection of Colorado resorts.
Big Mountains and Strong Ski Towns
Whistler appeared repeatedly in the comments, while Jackson, Jackson Hole, Palisades, Kirkwood, Mammoth, Alpine Meadows, Mt. Baker, Silverton, and Mt. Bohemia also earned mentions.
Aspen Highlands and Snowmass were highlighted specifically for combining strong skiing with a town filled with restaurants. Lake Louise, Sunshine Village, Revelstoke, and Sun Peaks represented the Canadian contingent.
One particularly detailed response came from a skier who selected Planai in Schladming, Austria. The comment praised the snow and skiing while emphasizing the village, restaurants, racing atmosphere, food, and local activities as major parts of the experience.
The Atmosphere Matters
The responses also showed that there is no single formula for a great ski resort. Some skiers focused almost entirely on terrain and snow, while others emphasized the character of the town and the feeling surrounding the mountain.
European destinations including Chamonix, Verbier, Zermatt, Grindelwald, Obergurgl, and Obertauern also appeared in the discussion.
