Nova Scotia — It’s been hard to keep track of all the changes going on at a certain Canadian ski resort. Cape Smokey in Nova Scotia recently reopened, and investments like a new gondola, snowmaking upgrades, and additional accommodations have made it a destination. This offseason, a major terrain expansion is underway.
For the 2026-27 season, Cape Smokey is adding a glade on the existing mountain. A new glade to the skier’s right of Check Me Shorts (a double-black diamond) will give skiers some steep tree skiing. This follows the recent reintroduction of seven trails and glades on the mountain that weren’t part of the reopening lineup.
Other 2026 Upgrades
The news follows Smokey’s announcement of a 4.5-year terrain expansion plan. First up is building on the steep side next to the existing terrain, which could create a GS course that connects to the Atlantic Ocean. The goal is to open some of this terrain for skiers this winter, but it will likely require natural snow.
Ecosign’s master plan (pictured below) shows the future expansions. One terrain will offer lots of adrenaline, and another new pod will have easy and intermediate trails. A new base area is also planned, giving a new access point to the ski resort.
Snowmaking upgrades are also underway. Three new pumps (one big and two small) are allowing their pumphouse to produce 30% more water. Seven new snow guns have also been acquired, which will also help with production. All these additions mean that Cape Smokey is going to have a memorable winter.
