The 2030 French Alpes Winter Olympics now have a finalized sports venue masterplan after the International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission completed its second annual meeting in Lyon this week.

The IOC confirmed the remaining venue assignments on September 16th, including the locations for ice sports in Lyon and Alpine skiing in the Savoie region. The decisions complete the major venue planning process for the Alpes 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Lyon will host ice hockey at the Décines-Charpieu arena and the historic Hall Tony Garnier. The Décines-Charpieu venue is also scheduled to host the 2028 Ice Hockey World Championships. Curling, figure skating and short track speed skating will take place at the Eurexpo convention center. Eurexpo will also serve as the location for the Main Media Centre.

Courchevel and Val d’Isère Get Alpine Skiing Events

The Alpine skiing schedule will be split between two major French ski destinations. Courchevel will host the speed events, including downhill and super-G. The resort will also host the men’s and women’s team combined events.

Val d’Isère will host the technical Alpine skiing events, with the giant slalom and slalom scheduled to take place there. The decision gives two of France’s best-known ski areas defined roles in the 2030 Winter Olympics. Both resorts have extensive experience hosting international Alpine skiing competitions.

Olympic Village Confirmed Near Lyon

The IOC also confirmed an Olympic Village for the Lyon cluster in Oullins-Pierre-Bénite. The village will be created through a housing development project that is already underway. According to the IOC, the project was selected in part because of its potential to contribute to long-term urban renewal in the Lyon metropolitan area.

The Alpes 2030 organizers have also reached several other milestones since the previous IOC Coordination Commission meeting, including defining the Games vision, launching the official emblem and confirming the sports program.

Planning Moves Toward 2030

With the venue plan now settled, organizers can begin developing the competition schedule and establishing ticketing principles. The organizing committee also plans to launch Rencontres Alpes 2030, a series of meetings intended to gather input from communities and stakeholders across the host territories.

Sustainability initiatives, celebration sites, and the Terre de Jeux 2030 program are also expected to take shape in the coming months as preparations continue for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
