The opening races of the 2026-27 FIS Masters World Cup in Nevados de Chillán, Chile, have been cancelled after the devastating fire that destroyed the Hotel Alto Nevados on September 6th.
More than 30 Masters racers were staying at the hotel while attending a preseason training camp ahead of the World Cup opener. According to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, all guests and hotel staff were able to evacuate safely.
Hotel Destroyed In Fire
The fire completely destroyed Hotel Alto Nevados during the afternoon of September 6th. The incident forced organizers to cancel the first World Cup races of the new Masters season, which had been scheduled to take place at the Chilean ski resort.
Nevados de Chillán provided assistance to those affected by the fire, including help with documentation, medication and other immediate needs. No serious injuries have been reported following the incident.
Masters World Cup Delayed
Approximately 100 Masters athletes representing 15 nations had entered the season-opening World Cup races in Nevados de Chillán. The cancellation means the 2026-27 FIS Masters World Cup season will now begin at a different location. The first competition of the season is expected to be the opening stop of the FIS Masters Indoor Cup in Wittenburg, Germany, in early November.
FIS Offers Support
FIS expressed gratitude to the Nevados de Chillán resort team and emergency services for their response following the fire. The organization also offered its support to the ski resort, local organizing committee and Chilean National Ski Association. The federation extended its thoughts to the athletes, staff, families and local community members affected by the fire.
