Massive congratulations going out to Dale “Grey Beard” Sanders who completed the 2,198-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine on Monday, reaching the summit of Mount Katahdin, the highest point in Maine and reclaimed the title as the oldest thru-hiker of the world famous trail.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy defines a successful thru-hike as completing the entire trail within a year. Hikers allowed to take breaks and complete sections in any order. Sanders began his through hike in September 2025 in West Virginia, completing the trail in sections before reaching Katahdin.
Lovingly known on the trail as Grey Beard, Sanders first became the oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail in 2017 at age 82. His record was later broken by 83-year-old M.J. Eberhart, known as Nimblewill Nomad. Soon after his record was broken Sanders began planning on reclaiming it but it was long road filled with adversity but one that he shared with his thousands of followers on social media.
Born in Kentucky in 1935, Sanders served in the U.S. Navy and spent much of his career working in parks and recreation before retiring in 2002. He has also completed other age-related endurance challenges, including paddling the entire length of the Mississippi River at age 87.
