Reno, Nevada — On the outskirts of the casino-filled Reno, Nevada, there’s a ski area that has the oldest non-profit learn-to-ski program in the country. Sky Tavern has been an important ski area for generations of Reno skiers and riders, providing an affordable place to learn. A new snowmaking machine could help them extend their season
Sky Tavern recently acquired a TechnoAlpin Snow Factory. This all-weather snowmaking machine can make snow even at warm temperatures thanks to a refrigeration system.
For now, this is only one of six of these at ski resorts on the planet. There are other all-weather snowmaking systems out there, such as the Latitude 90 snowmaking machine.
On August 22nd, Sky Tavern hosted an on-snow party. No, the date isn’t a typo. The festivities included a snowman contest, sledding, and an obstacle course. They also had a bike ride, BBQ, and a live DJ who probably played Ice Ice Baby at least once.
The day even featured an appearance by a famous skier. Wayne Wong, who’s been working with filmmakers on a new documentary, stopped by the ski area to see snow again.
Does this mean that Sky Tavern will be among the first ski areas to open in North America this upcoming winter? We’ll find out soon enough.
