A new Kickstarter campaign is looking to reinvent the portable propane campfire by creating a design that delivers heat you can actually feel. The Happy Caveman Campfire, which launched on Kickstarter on August 11th, is seeking backers for a four pound radiant heat system that can supposedly provide a true campfire experience without smoke or ash.
The product has a planned retail price of $499, though people who get involved now can get it for as low as $350. Once the lowest tier dries up, the Kickstarter Special will be available for $425. The campaign runs until September 15th, 2026.
A Different Approach to Campfire Heat
The Happy Caveman Campfire uses a vertical stainless steel radiant tube with an internally housed propane burner to act as a fire pit, allowing the steel itself to function similarly to the glowing coals of a traditional wood fire. The tube can reach approximately 1,300°F while producing 40,000 BTU per hour.
A system they call ThermaFluxuses channels in the tube to direct flames and hot exhaust outward at a body level, rather than allowing the heat to escape vertically. The combination of radiant heat from the steel and the redirected exhaust apparently allows users to feel warmth from across a fire ring.
The unit weighs four pounds and stands 26 inches tall. It is constructed from 304 stainless steel and 360 brass and runs from a standard 20 pound propane tank. It can supposedly run for nine hours of burn time at full output.
Designed for Campfire Restrictions
Part of the product’s intention is to target campers dealing with increasingly common fire restrictions across the western United States. As the Happy Caveman Campfire uses propane and can be shut off quickly, it could remain an option in areas where wood campfires are prohibited.
Fire regulations vary by location and restriction level, so always be sure to check with local land managers before using the product or any other sort of flame. The campfire is assembled in San Diego with mostly American-made components, though the propane hose and quick connect are currently imported.
Two Years of Development
The product’s development has gone through more than 15 physical prototypes and over 75 burner configurations. Every unit is scheduled to undergo a leak test and burn test before shipment, and the company is targeting third party safety testing beginning in September.
Initial shipments are planned for January of 2027 with founding backers expected to receive their units first. The Happy Caveman Campfire is currently listed as patent pending in the United States. The campaign had more than 4,500 people join the pre-launch email list before the Kickstarter went live, so move fast if you want to get in early.
