A black bear recently found its way inside a hotel in Breckenridge, Colorado, during its search for food. The Breckenridge Police Department said the bear broke into Grand Timber Lodge where it found and at some M&M’s. No people or animals were hurt throughout the incident.
Breckenridge officers responded and arrived at the hotel, working to coax the black bear into the wilderness. Police used the incident to remind both residents and visitors that bears remain active throughout the area.
Black Bear Enters Breckenridge Hotel
The encounter displays a challenge Colorado mountain towns tend to face as black bears move through areas inhabited by people. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, black bears are the largest carnivores in the state. They range in color from blond and cinnamon to brown and black. They can be found in many areas inhabited by people and simple precautions can help reduce possible conflicts.
Black bears are highly adaptable when it comes to finding food, and they can learn to seek out human food, scraps, and garbage if they repeatedly find those resources. A bear that finds food around homes or other developed areas can begin changing its behavior and searching for additional human sources of food.
Breckenridge Police Urge Bear Awareness
Residents and visitors of Breckenridge are urged to remain alert, to secure food and trash, and to never approach or feed a bear. The Grand Timber Lodge saw no more than some missing M&M’s, but incidents like this can lead to serious property damage and injury to wildlife or people.
