Hancock, Vermont — We’ve seen a few restorations of historic buildings this offseason at New England ski resorts. Cranmore Mountain Resort renovated its 1939 cabin and made it into a museum. Meanwhile, a Vermont ski area is reusing its 1938 cabin.
This offseason, Middlebury Snowbowl is working on restoring the Hubbard Cabin. Created in 1938, the Hubbard Cabin had various uses for the Vermont ski area, including as a base lodge and as office space. However, it hadn’t been used since 2003 because it was in disrepair.
The big move occurred earlier this month. Photographer Eric Killorin captured the short move from the next to their maintenance shed to its new location, which is between the Starr Shelter and the snowmaking pond. It will be the new home of the Middlebury Ski Team, with a convenient location for training. The Starr Shelter is also undergoing renovations this offseason to improve the guest experience.
Ultimately, it’s nice to see a big part of Vermont skiing history reused for the modern day.
About Middlebury Snowbowl
Owned by Middlebury College, Middlebury Snowbowl is one of the hidden gems of Vermont skiing. It’s also one of the most historic, with the first trails cut back in 1934. The ski area features 28 trails and 11 gladed areas across over 600 skiable acres, including various sidecountry options. Four lifts are situated across the mountain. Snowmaking is surprisingly limited, only servicing six trails. Recent additions include the new Sheehan quad chairlift, night skiing, and snowmaking enhancements.
Located nearby the ski area is the Rikert Outdoor Center. Also owned by the college, it offers trails for cross-country skiers, fat bikers, and snowshoers.
