SUN VALLEY, Idaho – Sun Valley Resort has become the first resort in the United States to earn certification through the DarkSky Approved Lodging Program. The recognition honors the Idaho resort’s efforts to reduce light pollution while protecting the natural nighttime environment and expanding opportunities for stargazing and outdoor recreation after sunset.
The designation from DarkSky International recognizes resorts that meet strict standards for responsible outdoor lighting, environmental stewardship, habitat protection, and public education about the importance of preserving dark skies. The nonprofit organization is a global leader in efforts to combat light pollution and promote healthier nighttime environments for both people and wildlife.
Sun Valley officials said the certification reflects the resort’s long standing commitment to protecting the natural landscape that has attracted visitors for nearly a century. Pete Sonntag, Chief Operating Officer at Sun Valley Resort, said preserving the night sky is an important part of maintaining the experience that makes the destination unique while helping protect it for future generations.
Responsible Lighting Creates Better Stargazing
Located in central Idaho’s high alpine landscape, Sun Valley already offers excellent conditions for viewing the night sky. Resort officials said the certification process required demonstrating compliance with DarkSky standards that reduce unnecessary artificial lighting across the property while increasing public awareness about light pollution.
DarkSky International praised the achievement, calling Sun Valley a model for resorts looking to balance hospitality with environmental responsibility. The organization said responsible lighting not only improves the guest experience but also benefits surrounding ecosystems that depend on natural darkness.
Guests visiting the resort can now experience darker skies throughout the property, including the village itself, where lighting has been designed to minimize unnecessary brightness while maintaining safety.
Best Places To View The Night Sky
Sun Valley provided several recommended locations for stargazing both on and around the resort. Top viewing areas include Bald Mountain near the Roundhouse, Dollar Mountain Lodge, the Sun Valley Pavilion Lawn, the Whitecloud Trail System, the Hemingway Memorial area, Trail Creek east of Sun Valley, and nearby Galena Summit within the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve. These locations offer expansive views with limited ambient light, creating ideal conditions for observing stars, planets, and meteor showers.
First Major Dark Sky Event Scheduled
The certification also launches a series of new astronomy themed experiences at the resort.
One of the first will be Stars Over Sun Valley on August 12th, 2026, timed to coincide with the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The evening event will transport guests by gondola to the Roundhouse restaurant on Bald Mountain for guided astronomy programming, food, beverages, and premium meteor shower viewing beneath some of the darkest skies in North America.
Future programming could include additional guided stargazing experiences, astronomy events, wellness offerings, and educational programs focused on preserving dark skies, reinforcing the resort’s position as a leader in sustainable mountain tourism.
