The Harihar Fort trek in India.
The Harihar Fort trek in India.

Located in the Nashik district of the Indian state of Maharashtra, Harihar Fort was originally built by the Yadava dynasty on a triangular prism of rock. Sitting at 3,676 feet, the fort is renowned for its unique architecture and near-vertical edges. According to IndiaHikes.com, the trek to the top rewards visitors with stunning 360-degree views of the Sahyadri range, but it’s not an easy one.

The demanding hike’s most recognizable feature is iconic rock-cut staircase that features a staggering 80-degree angle, with hand-carved notches providing grip during the ascent. After the first 90 steps, a narrow traverse takes travelers to the next 100 steps. The sheer drop and potential for slippery moss during the rainy season make the entire route less-than-ideal for beginners.

The hike beings either from Nirgudpada or Harshewadi village. From Nirgudpada, the trail takes roughly one hour and 15 minutes to reach a scenic plateau, passing through fields and forests. From the plateau, it takes another 90 minutes to reach the summit. At the top, trekkers can explore a small pond, idols of Lord Hanuman, Shiva, and Nandi, and the Balekilla, which serves as the fort’s highest vantage point.

If you’re looking to visit, the ideal time is between June an February. Just remember, this hike is definitely not one for those afraid of heights.
