While “May the 4th” is now a day of global celebration for Star Wars fans, the pun actually originated in a political context. The earliest recorded use of the phrase appeared on May 4, 1979, in a full-page advertisement in the London Evening News.

Placed by the Conservative Party, the ad congratulated Margaret Thatcher on becoming the UK’s Prime Minister that day, stating: “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.” The quotable pun reemerged in 2008 by a Facebook group dedicated to “Luke Skywalker Day”:
