Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel reopening @ Campground Grand Canyon National Park
Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel reopening @ Campground Grand Canyon National Park

Excellent news out of Grand Canyon National Park where Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Campground are set to reopen to overnight guests on November 1, 2025. In addition to the campground reopening, the lower South Kaibab Trail below The Tipoff will reopen to the public tomorrow restoring access to Phantom Ranch and other areas along the Colorado River corridor.

The campground closure were caused by the Dragon Bravo Wildfire which tore through the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park beginning July 4, 2025. All told the wildfire burned 145,504 acres before it was 100% contained on September 29th, 2025.

The campground closures were also caused trail stabilization work and ongoing infrastructure projects including the installation of stream gauge monitoring along Bright Angel Creek to help evaluate flash flood risks, a project done in coordination with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A warning system for Phantom Ranch is expected to be installed in the near future, providing additional tools to help protect visitors and staff.

Reopening November 1st, 2025:

  • Phantom Ranch (canteen and cabins, as water allows)
  • Bright Angel Campground
  • Lower South Kaibab Trail (Tipoff to Phantom Ranch)

Remaining Closed:

  • River Trail and Silver Bridge – through December 31, 2025
  • North Kaibab Trail north of Clear Creek – due to post-fire hazards

Heads up if you plan on being one of the first campers at the freshly reopened campsites as Grand Canyon National Park has issued a schedule water advisory from November 4–18, a temporary shutdown of water pumping for the Transcanyon Waterline Replacement Project will limit water availability. Water will be available at Phantom Ranch (center spigot near the Canteen) and Havasupai Gardens, but not at Bright Angel Campground or Boat Beach.

Water and Fire Restrictions Begin October 31 🚨

Grand Canyon National Park will implement Stage 3 Water Restrictions and Stage 2 Fire Restrictions beginning Friday, October 31 due to limited water availability and ongoing work on the Transcanyon Waterline Replacement Project.

Water Restrictions:

💧 Mather Campground water spigots and Camper Services will close.

💧 Visitors, residents, and staff are asked to conserve water—limit showers, turn off taps, and report leaks.

💧 From November 4–18, expect limited water availability along the Inner Canyon Corridor during a planned pumping shutdown
