Sheboygan, Wisconsin aka The Malibu of the Midwest
Sheboygan, Wisconsin aka The Malibu of the Midwest

When you think of Wisconsin thoughts of diehard Packers fans and delicious cheese curds likely enter your mind but there is a little town on the shores of Lake Michigan that might make you rethink your associations.

Sheboygan, Wisconsin is located about 1 hour north of Milwaukee and about 15 south of Whistling Straights Golf Course, host of the 2021 Ryder Cup, and is best known as the Bratwurst Capital of the World but it also has another claim to fame as being the Malibu of the Midwest because it is a freshwater surfing hub on the inland seas otherwise known as the Great Lakes.

Malibu of the Midwest is a bit of a stretch as you won’t find any $20 million homes on postage stamp sized lots but you will find a thriving community of dedicated surfers who are more than willing to brave the elements when the waves are firing. Enjoy this short film by filmmakers Andrew Jakus and Cole Sheldon who delve into the complex nature of Sheboygan surf and reveal a story that has largely gone untold until now.
