If you haven’t started getting your body in shape for the upcoming season, now is the time to get started. While many choose to leave getting in shape until the slopes are open, preseason conditioning can help reduce the risk of injuries while improving overall fitness and stamina, increasing flexibility, and enhancing muscle strength and joint stability.
Mogul and freeskiing legend Jonny Moseley recently shared one of his preseason workouts to social media, engaging the core and hip flexors to work the transitions. It’s a pretty serious workout and seems like it would certainly help when the moguls start calling your name.
If you’re uncertain how you should be engaging in preseason training, there’s several things to consider. Cardio is definitely helpful, especially when it comes to enjoying a long day on the mountain, but it shouldn’t be all endurance training. Focusing on both lower body strength and core strength will help with your control on the slopes and your balance, all while reducing the risk of injuries. Several exercises that can help include squats, lunges, planks, jump squats, single-leg balance, and beyond.
