West Vancouver, British Columbia — For those who want a different type of view of the city of Vancouver, an option is to head to the mountains. The two closest ski resorts to Vancouver, Grouse and Cypress, offer people the chance to view Vancouver from the mountains. For those who want to see the city lights from afar, a new experience will allow guests to see the stars and skyscrapers.
This week, Cypress Mountain announced that starting tonight, the British Columbia ski resort will be offering scenic sunset chairlift rides. Guests will ride the Lions or Sky quad chairlifts to reach the summit, which is the highest point in the North Shore Mountains. While at the summit, guests will be able to witness incredible views of the Ch’ích’iyúy Elx̱wíḵn (the Lions or Twin Sisters), Átl’ka7tsem (Howe Sound), Gulf Islands, the Vancouver city skyline, and Mount Baker. The Sunset Scenic Ride will be offered Thursday through Sunday from August 1st through 31st. One dollar (CAD) from each ticket sold will go towards the BC Parks Foundation.
“This is a completely new way to experience Cypress Mountain in the summer,” said Matt Davies, the General Manager of Cypress Mountain. “At 4,720 feet, you’re not just watching the sunset—you’re surrounded by it.”
For those who go, it’s recommended that guests show up thirty minutes before the scheduled sunset time. For August 1st, that time is at 8:50 p.m. On August 31st, it will be 7:55 p.m. The last rides down the Lions Chair will be at 8:45 p.m., and the last call for the Sky Chair will be at 9:30 p.m.
Situated around thirty minutes away from downtown Vancouver, Cypress Mountain is one of the most convenient ski resorts for city residents and tourists planning a BC ski trip. The ski resort features 61 trails, 7 lifts, 600 skiable acres of inbounds terrain, and a vertical drop of 2010 vertical feet. Other summer attractions include a mountain coaster, axe throwing, hiking trails, and scenic chairlift rides.
