A 10-man prison work crew helped rescue and carry out an injured hiker in the Tillamook State Forest.
The crew from South Fork Forest Camp, a 200-bed minimum security work camp in Oregon, was accompanied by security staff when they responded to assist the Tillamook Fire District with a backcountry rescue on Kings Mountain Trail. The hiker had broken their ankle approximately 1.3 miles up the steep terrain.

The inmates hiked worked beside emergency services personal to help carry the hiker back to the trailhead. Oregon’s history of using adults in custody labor started with South Fork Forest Camp in 1951. In a given year, South Fork Camp can produce up to 28,000 man days of skilled adults in custody.
