Ferry Fire @ Cottonwood Canyon State Park
Ferry Fire @ Cottonwood Canyon State Park

Thanks to excellent fireproofing work by Cottonwood Canyon State Park staff, only a few small structures were lost in a brushfire (no buildings) that burned some 5,000 acres of its arid landscape filled with sagebrush and dry grass.

Cottonwood Canyon State Park rangers evacuated campsites with a “LEVEL 3 – GO NOW” order as the Ferry Fire whipped up due to high winds. Multiple aircraft were deployed to the scene and provided aerial firefighting support.

The Ferry Fire was just one of approximately two dozen fires reported across Central Oregon this week following an electrical storm that brought more than 5,000 lightning strikes in 72 hours. The cause of the Ferry Fire is currently under investigation.

The Sherman County Sheriff’s Office documented the fire and its aftermath in the series of videos below.
