A 48-year-old male hiker and his dog required rescue on June 4 after being reported overdue at Lake Mead National Recreation Area while searching for another dog that went missing on May 28. The man was rescued by National Park Service rangers following a coordinated, multi-agency search.

The man learned online about a dog that went missing after a motor vehicle accident on May 28, deciding to go search for the animal with his own. They were later reported overdue and a search was initiated.

The man and his dog were located and safely evacuated from a remote area of the park at night following to search operational periods. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, Nevada Department of Wildlife, and Red Rock Search and Rescue all assisted in the rescue.

“Our rangers demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and responsiveness during this operation. Thanks to their quick action and the strong coordination between partner agencies, we were able to bring this person—and their dog—home safely. We’re proud of the outcome and the teamwork behind it.” – Mike Gauthier, park superintendent.

As excessive heat begins to land in the park every day, Lake Mean National Recreation Area officials are reminding visitors to stay prepared when recreating in the desert. Bring at least on gallon of water per person per day, wear light clothing, a wide brimmed, and sunscreen, and limit outdoor activity between 10am and 4pm to avoid peak heat.

Cell service will not always be available in Lake Mean National Recreation Area. Have a plan and carry a map, GPS, or both. Stay aware of the signs of heat illness. If you begin to feel confused, dizzy, or nauseous, you should act immediately.
