Australian skiers and snowboarders are getting an extra special treat to go alongside several resorts’ opening weekend this weekend, with some of the snowiest weather in years touching down in the Land Down Under.
According to the Australian Broadcast Company, the forecasted cold snap could bring some of the heaviest rain in a few years across southern South Australia and south-west Victoria while also bringing the most widespread snow in the country in years. Snow is expected to fall at altitudes above about 2,600 feet to 3,930 feet (800 and 1,200 meters) over a four day period.
With most of Australia’s ski resorts sitting between 4,590 feet and 6,560 feet (1,400 to 2,000 meters), the storm could be quite fruitful for the mountains. Between Saturday and Sunday, around 15 to 31 inches (40-80cm) of snow could fall at the ski areas with a bit more expected in the following days.
Several Australian resorts are set to open this weekend, including Mt. Buller, Thredbo Resort, Ben Lomond, Perisher, Hotham Alpine Resort, and Falls Creek.
