A brand new webcam placed in Yellowstone National Park‘s Biscuit Basin captured footage of a small eruption in Black Diamond Pool on Saturday, May 31st, marking the first video recorded eruption since the large explosion that destroyed the area’s boardwalk back in July 2024.
The webcam was installed on May 14, posting a static image to the USGS website every 15 minutes while logging video on site for later download. When analysis of the static images indicated changes in the pool on Saturday evening, footage was downloaded and showed the small eruption at 8:39pm MDT.
While this was the first eruption captured on camera since July 2024, other monitoring data and some eyewitnesses have provided evidence of several sporadic eruptions that have occurred since the major event.
