Yellowstone National Park crews are had at work clearing the Beartooth Highway for the summer season.

Beartooth Highway (US-212) runs from Red Lodge, Montana, into the Custer Gallatin National forest before climbing up switchbacks until it reaches the Montana/Wyoming state border. From there it heads into Wyoming, eventually reaching Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park partners both with the Montana Department of Transportation and the Wyoming Department of Transportation to clear and open the high-elevation road as it runs between Cooke City and Red Lodge.

The incredible mountain road tends to open the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, but nothing has officially confirmed it’s opening for this Friday. Those hoping to get on the road should check both MT DOT and WY DOT for current road status.

Beartooth Basin, a summer only ski area located along Beartooth Highway, is set to open next week assuming the highway is operational. The ski area offers 600 acres of skiing and snowboarding varying in pitch from 15 to 50 degrees, serviced by two poma surface lifts.
