Beartooth Basin

If you’re looking for a great way to celebrate Memorial Day this year, consider heading to the only summer ski area in North America. Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area, located along Beartooth Highway in northwest Wyoming, is set to open on May 26 with operations planned until July 6 if snow and weather permits.

Beartooth Basin is steep, offering 600 acres of skiing and snowboarding that varies in pitch from 15 to 50 degrees. It reaches a summit of 10,900 feet with 1,000 vertical feet of terrain, serviced by two poma surface lifts. Advanced intermediate/expert skills are required at the Twin Lakes Headwall.

Beartooth Basin is limited to summer operations due to its location on Beartooth Highway, a road that doesn’t get plowed throughout the winter. The spring plowing is done through a joint effort between the Montana Department of Transportation and the National Park Service, as the road pokes into the corner of Yellowstone National Park.

Despite opening this summer, Beartooth Basin is currently up for sale. Those interested in buying the ski area can inquire by emailing beartoothbasin@gmail.com.
