Alta Ski Area may have stopped spinning its lift for the summer but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the mountain if you are willing to work for it. Located within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Alta Ski Area operates under a special use permit with the US Forest Service.
Skiers are free to travel uphill at Alta but should remember that their special use permit allows restriction of uphill travel to protect ski area improvements, employees and skiers, and for operational and safety purposes. Currently these restrictions include the Supreme lift line:
“Please avoid the Supreme lift line and use extra caution on the Summer Road as we are plowing the road in preparation for the construction of Supreme lift. Backcountry conditions exist. Equipment may be encountered on the mountain.”
If you plan to skin up Alta keep in mind that backcountry conditions exist, to be careful of equipment that may be encounter on the mountain, and realize there is no ski patrol. Proceed with caution and be respectful of Alta’s uphill policies.
Alta Ski Area Uphill Skiing Statement:
Alta Ski Area is now open to Uphill Travel. The Supreme lift line is closed to all travel and please use extra caution on the Summer Road as we are plowing the road in preparation for work on Supreme lift.
When traveling uphill in Alta Ski Area please note the following:
• Equipment may be encountered on the mountain
• Hazards are not marked
• Please treat the ski area as backcountry terrain
• You are responsible for assessing avalanche hazard and risk
• Carry and know how to use avalanche gear
• You are responsible for your own rescue
• There is no ski patrol
• No access to Snowbird
