Wilmington, New York — Yesterday, Whiteface Mountain wrapped up its 2024-25 season. Whiteface’s closing day also marked the end of an era for two of its chairlifts.
The most notable chairlift retirement for frequent skiers at the New York ski resort is the Little Whiteface chairlift. This fixed-grip double chairlift goes from the area around the Legacy Lodge to the top of Little Whiteface. It featured a mid-station, which skiers enjoyed for the ability to get quick lips in on advanced terrain. The original iteration of the Little Whiteface chairlift opened in 1958, but it was gradually replaced in the late 1970s with a Hall chairlift. In the 1980s, new lift towers were installed that could hold onto two separate chairlifts. Which brings us to…
The other chairlift that is being removed this offseason is the Mountain Run chairlift. Interestingly, its lift towers are also connected to the Little Whiteface chairlift. Opened back in 1989, this chairlift rarely operated in its last years due to Little Whiteface’s mid-station, which is situated to next to Mountain Run’s top terminal, along with the opening of the Cloudsplitter Gondola in 1999.
According to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, both of these chairlifts are set to be replaced by a new SkyTrac fixed-grip double chairlift. Whiteface skiers will be stoked to here that this new Little Whiteface chairlift will also have a mid-station. More details about the project are to come in the months ahead.
