In climbing, road maintenance, and general land management, rock trundling is the removal of loose rocks from cliffs or rock faces to reduce the risk of a future rock fall from erosion. Trundling can be extremely dangerous or deadly when done by amateurs but it’s essential for professional crews handling rock fall hazards.
This video of what appears to be an excavation or logging site in the mountains is a great example of just how dangerous these moving rocks can be. Though nobody was in the way and this seems to be an intentional trundling, this massive boulder manages to do some serious damage to the forest underneath.
Rock trundling should never be done by amateurs without proper safety precautions. However watching the result of a loose boulder rolling into the forest is undoubtedly entertaining, especially if the people who released the rock were professionals.
