Four search and rescue missions were conducted with assistance from Summit County Sheriff’s Deputies on Colorado’s Quandary Peak between April 7 and April 13, with all but one involving hikers who were unprepared for spring conditions.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, two rescues were conducted on Thursday alone. The first saw a lone hiker who got stuck off-trail in deep snow. The hiker was not dressed warmly enough for the conditions. Near the same time, a lost couple called for assistance after getting trapped in deep snow.
The following day, a man dressed in just shorts and tennis shoes called for help after getting lost off-trail in deep snow and feeling cold. Then the next day, seven people who were skiing and snowshoeing when they ended up sinking into soft, deep snow as the weather warmed up.
All four groups were successfully assisted to safety by search and rescue teams. Several of the groups lacked the proper navigation tools like GPS-guided maps on their phones. The Summit County Rescue Group issued a warning surrounding postholing earlier this week, warning hikers and recreators to be aware of the spring snow conditions.
