Avalanche breaks through ice.

Revelstoke based skier David Thompson captured this unbelievable footage of an avalanche colliding with a frozen lake, breaking the ice and creating quite the mind-blowing snowy wave below.

It’s a pretty good (and spooky) representation of just how powerful avalanches can be, and a great reminder to use extreme caution when traveling in the backcountry and in avalanche terrain.

Of course if you’re going to head out into the backcountry, make sure you do so with the proper training and gear, including an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe. Traveling in avalanche terrain alone is never recommended.
