Sweden — One of the most fascinating abandoned ski resorts on the planet is situated in the Arctic Circle. In the 2010s, two snowboarding legends attempted to make Pullinki (also known as Svanstein) into one of the best ski resorts in the country. However, their ambitions hit the flats.
This past weekend, YouTuber Jay Swingler posted a mini documentary of his trip to an abandoned ski resort in Sweden. One of his fans emailed him, detailing that there’s this abandoned ski resort where he could ski for free. He challenged Jay to ski there, stay at the abandoned hotel overnight in the cold temperatures, and cook a meal there. So he takes on the challenge and overcomes some obstacles along the way to explore an abandoned Swedish ski resort. Besides the clickbait cover photo and the less-than-stellar skiing, it’s an interesting look at an abandoned gem.
This isn’t the first exploration of this abandoned place, as popular YouTuber Joona Päätalo made his own trip there last year.
Information about this place on the internet is pretty minimal, but here’s what I found: In the 2010s, two snowboarding legends, Ingemar Backman and Johan Olofsson, purchased it. However, due to the pandemic, it closed in 2020 and didn’t reopen.
Apparently, a new owner purchased the mountain with the intention of reopening it. Pullinki didn’t operate for the 2023-24 season, but they aimed to reopen for the 2024-25 season. That clearly didn’t happen, and it’s now becoming a popular site for explorers of abandoned places.
