Keeping your stomach full while skiing is key to having a good day on the mountain. If you wind up too hungry, you wind up tired and in a bad mood, and if you wind up in a bad mood, you ruin everyone else’s day on the mountain. So if you want to ensure that you stay happy and energetic throughout the day, consider throwing one of these five snacks in your pocket.

5. Granola Bar

The granola bar is always a good option. There are so many different company and flavor choices, with different balances of protein, calories, and sometimes caffeine to keep you moving. If you prefer something that’s as healthy as possible, stick to a bar that’s made with nuts and berries. If you like something that tastes good, grab something chocolate flavored. You really can’t go wrong, and they’re usually plenty cheap.

4. Peanut Butter & Jelly

Easy, filling, and delicious. It’s your choice of bread, peanut butter, and jelly, with plenty of combinations to choose from. If you want something pre-made, grab yourself an Uncrustable. Personally I make my own, keeping them in a sandwich bag in my pocket. White bread, smooth peanut butter, and sugary jelly for the hardcore days, whole grain, crunchy peanut butter, and a nice preserve for the more relaxed days. Really it’s all up to your tastes.

3. Starbursts

If you’re looking for a sugar boost on the mountain, stuff your pockets full of Starbursts. They’re quick to eat and will provide a burst of energy when you need it, plus they’re darn tasty. Also, lifties and ski patrollers will love you forever if you give them a Starburst while they’re working (they might even give you some insider knowledge if you give them a handful, no promises though).

2. Pizza Slice

Pulling out a whole pizza slide while on the chairlift is a true power move, especially if you pull it out from your pocket. Take the leftovers from the night before, whether it’s delivery or a frozen pizza you made at home, toss a slice in a sandwich bag, and throw that in your pocket. You won’t be unhappy.

1. Pickle

This might be a bit controversial, but I stand by it. Pickles are by far the best snack for the ski lift. Pickles are high in sodium, yes, but they’re also a vegetable, which means they must be good for you. Plus they can be quite hydrating, with the pickle juice being packed full of electrolytes. If you’re having trouble lasting all day on the mountain, grab yourself a pickle. It will bring you back to life.
